City staff has been working with consultants on a data-driven process to determine feasibility of the facility size, type, and location, to ensure a successful project that will serve the community and attract visitors for years to come. Background & Progress
Council approved the study in April 2022 by hiring Gensler and Associates, an architect-led consulting team, to continue a positive step forward in the City’s voter-approved signature bond project. The multi-phase study kicked off in May 2022.
Results are expected to be presented to Council in early 2023.
The professional services agreement awarded to Gensler and Associates will explore:
Financial models that include estimates of capital and operating costs
Public-private opportunities
Opportunities for preservation of existing buildings and the historic character of the neighborhood
Recommendations on how to safeguard dilapidated buildings, and options for funding sources that align with the current status of the litigation
During the robust public engagement process for the study, the public will be afforded ample opportunities to provide feedback on programming, vision, and cultural character.
As part of the study’s public engagement process, a steering committee was recently created to capture initial community feedback pertaining to vision and character for the site. The steering committee is comprised of El Paso residents with diverse backgrounds who are active in the community and share a passion for El Paso. Input from this citizen committee will be shared during the hybrid public meeting.
Initial Findings
On Sept 12, 2022 Initial findings from the consulting team were presented to City Council. That presentation is included in the video to the right.
